5-Hit Barrage by Bird
Tuesday, August 22nd, 1989
There are moments in a player's career that are etched into their memories forever. Nolan Bird of the Newport Navigators had one of those moments when he went 5 for 5 at the plate today in the 13-5 win over the Irondale Steelers at Pioneer Park.
The 26-year-old catcher told reporters in the postgame interview, "This is a day I won't forget soon, but I'll settle to just get a hit or two every day... enough hits to hang around the league a little bit longer... like 10... 15 more years maybe."
Nolan Bird hit a two-run double in the 1st, was hit by a pitch in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Dave Gordon in the 6th, doubled in the 8th and hit a two-run double in the 9th.
Batting .235 to date, Bird has 21 home runs and 69 RBIs.
