2-Game Suspension for Navigators Hawking
Sunday, September 6th, 1998
Jim Hawking's disrobing act in yesterday's loss to the Portsmouth Clippers at Arcadia Journal Ballpark cost him a 2-game suspension. The league office informed the Newport Navigators today that their third baseman would be suspended for "his poor conduct and unacceptable behavior that made a farce out of the game."

After being called out on strikes, Hawking was ejected by the home plate umpire after a heated and animated discussion. In protest for the ejection, he proceeded to throw his bat down, take off his batting gloves, cap, shirt, socks and shoes and left them at home plate, refusing to pick them up.

Asked about the suspension, Hawking sheepishly told reporters, "I did a stupid and embarrassing thing. Let's just leave it at that."

This season Hawking has banged out 129 hits in 468 at-bats for a .276 average with 7 home runs. He is getting on base at a .309 pace and his totals also include 51 RBIs and 47 runs scored.
