Suspensions Handed Out for Bench-Clearing Brawl Friday, September 19th, 1997 Yesterday at Pioneer Park Oliver Johnson and Butch Wilkinson got into each other's space and then into each other's face. They began to grapple and fell to the ground. That's when it boiled over into a full-fledged bench-clearing tussle between the Irondale Steelers and Park City (C) Patriots. Reason finally prevailed as the umpires restored order. After much discussion, only the two major combatants were ejected from the game. Today the league office notified both ballclubs that Johnson and Wilkinson would be given 3-game suspensions for fighting. This year Johnson is batting .281 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs. This season Wilkinson has made 9 relief appearances, recorded no saves and compiled a 1-0 won-lost mark and a 8.22 ERA. In pitching 7.2 innings, he has totaled 4 strikeouts and 1 walk. |
