Méndez at His Best, Whips Steelers Monday, August 22nd, 1994 Alfonso Méndez of the Newport Navigators just toyed with the Irondale Steelers today, blanking them 8-0. He was almost untouchable, baffling them on a 3-hit shutout with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk. "I'm sweating now because it's hot in here," Méndez said in the clubhouse after the game. "But it didn't even feel like I was sweating out there." One of his teammates said it was easy to play behind him today. "It was like he's just playing with the hitters and doing whatever he wanted to do." This year Méndez has posted a 4-10 mark in 22 starts and has a 4.29 ERA. |
